With the new year arriving, we all feel like we need to start anew. While I was thinking about my goals for this year, I had an epiphany.
I don’t own my belongings. My belongings own me.
I have realized that I spend a good portion of my time cleaning things, picking up things, organizing things, moving things, stepping over things……….
So I have decided to take control of all the things and to really look at what things need to stay and what needs to go. I need to visualize what I want my home to look like and really ask myself:
What do I really need?
What do I love?
What is important to me?
What needs to be showcased?
Does this add value to my life?
Does it serve a purpose?
Am I keeping this because I love it or because I feel obligated?
With that being said, I am only talking about my personal belongs and those that I use. I will not be touching anyone else’s, which will be hard. I hope that the rest of my family will see the beauty, space and freedom I experience and will be inspired to follow my example.
I know that there are a million checklists, blog posts and books about decluttering and minimalism but I have decided to work one spot at a time, so bit by bit it will all get done without overwhelming me. There is no “one-size-fits-all” decluttering strategy. Everyone is different, has different circumstances and different goals. Taking every item out of clothing out of every drawer and closet and going through them will not work for my situation but may be perfect for yours.
Obviously this will take some time. It took time to accumulate all of this and it will take time to go through it. Maybe even the whole year and that’s ok. I constantly need to remind myself of this because I honestly want to tear through my house like the Tasmanian Devil.
So my Big Goal for 2017 is less stuff and more hygge (more about that later).
